Wildcard Wednesday || The Dawn of Phase 3 (and Justice)

Greetings everyone and thank you for stopping by for another edition of Wildcard Wednesday! A lot has happened between my last post on July 8th; most of it coming from San Diego Comic-Con 2015 with trailers galore for the ultimate DC and Marvel fans. For this week's blog, I would just like to go over what we can expect from our favorite superheroes next year and I am also going to give a little recap about Ant-Man and my thoughts about the film.

2016 is anticipated to bust the block throughout the year with a whopping 7 scheduled releases from DC and Marvel:

• February 12: Deadpool (Fox)
• March 25: Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice
• May 6: Captain America: Civil War
• May 27: X-Men: Apocalypse (Fox)
• August 5: Suicide Squad
• October 7: Gambit (Fox)
• November 4: Doctor Strange

(Sinister Six was scheduled to release in 2016 prior to the recent news of Marvel and Sony co-producing a rebooted Spider-Man film, so that is currently pending)

I know that Star Wars isn't within the Marvel or DC universe, but since it's being released in the middle of December, it will technically be a 2016 film. Star Wars is arguably one of the biggest franchises is movie history. Given the fan-base has been waiting for a sequel like this to come we can expect huge numbers from Episode VII, setting a bar for Batman v Superman to inevitably beat. I mean c'mon...Batman and Superman are obviously the most popular superheroes ever. This is the first time they will be featured in a live-action film, they've got to beat the record by a landslide right?

Deadpool is a relatively new character. Although he was introduced in 1991, his unique personality and connection to the comic-book readers has created a huge cult; convincing Marvel to have his own film. That preview from Comic-Con brings a lot to the table. The origin story and his crowd-pleasing personality already has me excited to watch his movie.

For the X-Men franchise, Bryan Singer has done an amazing job cleaning up the mess made from X-Men: The Last Stand and essentially rebooting everything with Days of Future Past. Now that all the X-Men are back, their ultimate super villain Apocalypse is lurking around the corner. He is an ancient mutant known to be the first to carry the mutant X-gene. He has the power to control molecules, which allows him to change his form, enhance his strength and size, regenerate limbs, and he has the capability of virtually all physical superhuman powers.  If you're a Dragonball Z fan, imagine Apocalypse being like Cell. That's what the X-Men have to face. However, it's not like Wolverine can just kick Apocalypse in the stomach, he spits out an android, and then he is powered down a level. It ain't gonna happen like that.

I'll be honest with you, I don't follow DC as much as I know about Marvel, but the Suicide Squad looked pretty interesting as well. Since I'm being honest, I'm mostly curious to see Jared Leto play the Joker. I'm assuming that's why they inserted his piece last in the Comic-Con trailer. He looked pretty awesome. Similar to how he looks in Arkham Asylum. I believe we also saw a glimpse of Batman intruding with the Squad's plans so we'll see how the Batman v Superman aftermath keys into the story there.

We haven't gotten a lot of news about Gambit and Doctor Strange, but there's obviously still a lot of time in between for a little teaser to be released.

Now...two huge storylines from DC and Marvel's franchises come to the big screen. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will loosely follow Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns and their meet-up in Gotham. On the other side, we have the famous Marvel Civil War storyline where the U.S. Government passes a Superhuman Registration Act. Those who oppose the act are led by Captain America and those who support the act are led by Iron Man. A major component in the story is Spider-Man/Peter Parker. As far as the box office goes, I think Batman v Superman will blow away the records previously set by the first Avengers film and Age of Ultron. Sorry, Cap...you've got enough on your plate to worry about box office numbers with your Civil War and all...

Alrighty. Last thing I wanna talk about is Ant-Man. Where do I start...I really enjoyed the film. I would give it a B+ with its solid character development and including important origin stories that fill in the background of the original Ant-Man, Hank Pym and the passing of the torch to Scott Lang. You might hear from people that they didn't like Ant-Man because it was slow and there wasn't a lot of action. These are the kinds of people who are spoiled with action-packed films and don't enjoy filling in plot points and character development. You cannot come into this film expecting it start off fast like how Age of Ultron did. It's a new character. An original Avenger...that shrinks down to an ant-sized man. What more can you expect?

That is all that I have for you this week. Lots of trailers. Lots of speculation. Lots of anticipation. 2016 will be about the beginning of Marvel's Phase 3 in the MCU vs. DC's start of the Justice League. Even though they are 8 years behind, I believe DC can easily make up ground if and only if the rest of the League can shine in their stand-alone films. I'm excite. Are you?!

Wildcard Wednesday || Fireworks in NBA Free Agency

Greetings everyone and thanks for stopping by for another edition of Wildcard Wednesday! Fans of the major sports like myself are currently in limbo...unless you're a die-hard baseball fan. No offense to you all who are fans of America's pastime sport, but it's just not my cup of tea. This past week was newsworthy just from the NBA, but we can't forget what the United States Women's National Soccer Team did by avenging their 2011 World Cup loss and putting on a clinic against Japan within the first 15 minutes of play. Oh my!

I don't know what it is about NBA Free Agency, but it's always exciting to hear rumors and people arguing if it's true. Stories are made up as players fly around to meet with GM's and see their presentations. I'll be honest. As a Lakers fan, I almost thought that Mitch was going to get it done and sign Lamarcus Aldridge after getting a second shot at it. Then when he (Aldridge) tweeted on July 4th that he was going to San Antonio, I was like...

But you know what? It wasn't the end of the world, because I believe in Mitch. The Lakers didn't need the homer right off the bat. Additions of Roy Hibbert, Lou Williams, and Brandon Bass provide some size and bench play. Are they automatically in playoff contention? Probably not, but it's a start. The problem with our sports society is that we set our expectations high so early. We put grades on drafts before players even set foot on the field or on the court. Players move in and out and we put in the books the next champion before training camps even begin. Whatever happened to setting a foundation and waiting 3-4 years? Rebuilding requires patience!

Big contracts for Anthony Davis, Damian Lillard, Kevin Love, Dwyane Wade, Paul Millsap, Brook Lopez, Draymond Green, Goran Dragic, Kawhi Leonard, and Jimmy Butler all signing with their current teams on huge deals are kind of boring. It's nice, but we always look forward to those big free agents signing with other teams and making big splashes like Lamarcus Aldridge and David West going to the Spurs and DeAndre Jordan to the Mavericks DeAndre Jordan changing his mind after his buddies convince him to stay in LA....WOW. I wouldn't say that Paul Pierce reuniting with his former Celtics head coach as a Clipper is a huge splash just because he is old. But hey, he made it work playing with the young tandem of John Wall and Bradley Beal in Washington. In my opinion, the loss of DeAndre in the middle will severely hurt the Clippers. Apparently there has been chemistry issues with DJ and CP3, hence the move to Dallas. So we'll see if Griffin and Paul can carry the Clippers on their shoulders without DeAndrre clogging the paint and grabbing 15+ rebounds per game. I still can't believe that CP3 and Blake Griffin just begged their almost ex-teammate to come back to LA. I'm just wow...I was going to publish this post earlier in the morning, but then I heard the news that something was happening between the Clippers teammates. I didn't think it was true. I thought it was some kind of joke. Some story to attract media attention, but ultimately DJ would end up still signing with the Mavericks despite their antics. Geez...I'm just amazed...

With Portland losing a lot of its key players outside of Lillard, I see them falling out of playoff contention and probably opening that last spot for either the Suns or the Lakers. As for the East, after the first top 6 teams it's any team's opportunity who can win at least 40 games to get those last 2 spots. Draft additions from the 76er's and Timberwolves make them young and give them a good enough foundation to get into the playoffs. I'm not going to predict who will get into the Finals, because that's just dumb. You can't predict who will win when you don't know about injuries. We all saw how injuries played a huge role from this past NBA season.

That will be it for this edition of Wildcard Wednesday! NBA Free Agency is a moving stream. With the big names off the board, role-players will continue to get calls from teams throughout the off-season. Let's just remember that whatever we see on paper at the beginning of this new season will not always be what we see at the beginning of May in 2016. Injuries and trades can and will happen. I'm hoping Kobe and the Lakers can make an impact in this competitive Western Conference. As they always say, time will tell!

Wildcard Wednesday || Digging Into Inside Out

Greetings everyone and thank you for stopping by for another edition of Wildcard Wednesday! I would like to apologize for not posting on my scheduled day last week. I was caught up with work (worked 11 straight days at one of my jobs and worked double at the Disney Store on some) so I really didn't have a lot of spare time. For today's topic I would like to talk about my recent viewing experience of Inside Out.

Since this is about Disney Pixar's recent release I would like to remind you all that the following content represent my own views/opinions and are in no way affiliated with the Walt Disney Company.

20 years of film making and Disney Pixar has shown that they still have what it takes to create original and magical content for fans of all ages to enjoy. Pixar definitely made it up to their fans for skipping out on 2014 by giving us a mind-bending treat with Inside Out in 2015, their first of two for this year. (The Good Dinosaur coming in November)

Not watching the movie during opening weekend and listening to people's reactions helped me prepare for the experience I was going to jump into. For many Guests I talked to throughout my shifts working at the Disney Store, they raved about the roller coaster of emotions from laughing to crying, beginning to end. I was also really surprised how deep the story got as the movie progressed. 

I might dig into some parts of the story, but I'm going to try to keep the main parts of the story off the books for those of you who have not had the chance to watch it yet. There are a lot of things that you can absorb throughout Inside Out, as an adult I was able to enjoy more of the small tidbits that the animators added into the mix. Young kids may not understand some of the abstract concepts that revolve around how Disney Pixar constructed how the mind works, but they can still enjoy the dialogue and character interactions.

One very unique and subtle thing that was not included in Inside Out that most films do have is the concept of a villain. You might think this as odd without watching it, but the story really drives on Riley's emotions (Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust) and their own differences to create conflicts that a typical villain would. Usually a villain would have a certain characteristic or knowledge that gives them an edge over the hero in order to defeat him/her. In the case for Inside Out, it is in Riley's emotions best interest to keep her happy and safe throughout her life. However, we begin to learn how tough it is when Joy and Sadness are no longer there and it is up to Anger, Fear, and Disgust to adjust to those changes. All without a villain.

I'm assuming viewers might have realized this as well, but I began to catch on that Sadness turned out to be the main character rather than Joy. What we want to believe throughout this film is that it is always important that Riley stayed happy, which is what Joy is mostly responsible for. 

**SPOILER ALERT**

Riley and her family undergo a huge change in their life by moving from Minnesota to San Francisco. From the beginning, Riley's emotions made it their goal to keep Riley happy throughout this transition. As things turn sour and eventually to Riley's emotional breakdown we understand that we all go through tough times in our lives. Sometimes we go to that unhappy place and you can't help yourself. You can't help, but cry. And you know what? That's okay. We can't always be happy all the time. Situations happen where you might need to shed a few tears. You might feel lost, scared, or angry. Crying is okay. Letting Sadness take over is okay. And that's what Joy realizes at the end of the film. She tried to convince us in the beginning that keeping Sadness away from everything else would make things better, but you can't ignore that emotion.

You don't have to watch the entire film to be familiar with what I'm going to talk about. All you need to do is watch one of the Inside Out Teaser where Riley and her parents are at the dinner table and her mom is asking how her first day of school was. You'll notice that when we zoom into the mom's head all of her emotions are women with brown hair and glasses just like the mom. And when we zoom into the dad's head all of his emotions are men with mustaches. However, for Riley's emotions...Joy and Sadness have blue hair, Disgust has green hair, and her emotions are mixed boy and girl. I'm not sure if Disney did this on purpose just so that Riley's emotions stand out compared to all the other characters, or if there is a underlying assumption that since Riley hasn't reached puberty she doesn't know her preferences yet...so as we grow older and mature our emotions start to change appearances based on our personality. I don't know. Maybe I'm just overthinking it. Maybe it's just a coincidence. What do you think?

Lastly, I mentioned earlier that the animators created some fun concepts on how our mind works and I just wanted to list some of the small tidbits they put into the movie:

• Special memories are also known as "core memories" and they make up our personality by the creation of "personality islands"
• Core memories can change. Just like how our personalities can slightly change as we grow older and more mature
• At the end of the day, our memories are stored into long-term memory. 
• "Forgettors" are in charge of throwing out memories that seem old and out-dated (they turn gray/black while they are stored in long-term memory)
• Our dreams are constructed by actors interpreting past memories. And sometimes those actors can be really bad

I hope my little review about Inside Out has convinced you to watch it if you haven't already or you're wanting to watch it again because it's such a good movie. My brother and I are thinking of taking my mom to watch it. I'm pretty sure she'll enjoy it. I might watch it for the 2nd time just to catch some of the traditional easter eggs Pixar likes to put into their films. I was so blown away the 1st time around I didn't really pay close attention to easter eggs. Anyway, that's all I have for you all for this week's edition of Wildcard Wednesday.

Wildcard Wednesday || LeBron James...the Best of All-Time?

Hello everyone and thank you for stopping by for another edition of Wildcard Wednesday! With the NBA Finals officially in the books, I would like to add my own opinion on the whole LeBron James Best of All-Time debate. Before I get to that, I would like to congratulate the Golden State Warriors for their outstanding season. One of the best offenses we have seen in recent memory combined with a stingy defense resulted in the ultimate prize.

Let's start off by saying that I absolutely respect LeBron James as a basketball player. He is an absolute beast and he is clearly the best basketball player on this planet. With his 6'8" 250 lb. frame, LeBron can play all positions on the floor. A lot of analysts like to say that he is a small forward in a point guard's body. This also refers that LeBron is more like Magic Johnson than Michael Jordan just because of his pass-first mentality to find his teammates for a high percentage shot. 

Magic and Mike are on a lot of peoples proverbial "Mount Rushmore of Basketball" and despite LeBron still having several years left to play in the NBA before he hangs it up, people are already looking to carve his face on the mountain. Does LeBron James deserve such praise? Let's get to the arguments.

LEBRON = HYPE

Ever since LeBron James was a sophomore in high school, everyone wanted to see him play. By his junior year, LBJ was already considered "the best high school basketball in America". The hype was so huge, Sports Illustrated declared LBJ to be "The Chosen One"...before he even stepped on an NBA court. He graduated high school as one the most hyped basketball players ever and I would assume that the Cleveland Cavaliers had no hesitation selecting him with the No. 1 overall draft pick in the 2003 NBA Draft. On his NBA debut versus the Sacramento Kings, LeBron recorded 25 points and during his Rookie of the Year campaign LeBron became the youngest in NBA history to score at least 40 points. The rest is pretty much history in the making. The hype was real. Sports Illustrated called it right.

The thing about LeBron's career is that whenever he posts outrageous numbers like he is doing during the 2015 NBA Finals, it's what we expect him to do. Oh, LeBron James had a 40pt-11ast-14rb game. That's it? A player of his size and freak athletic ability, LBJ can will himself to score in the paint every single time. If he wanted to, he could score 50 a night, but he knows that's not healthy for his basketball team. It's what we expect out of him because we've set high standards for him ever since he got drafted. 

Let me know end this argument with this.

If Michael Jordan dominated the 90's with a 6'6" 195 lb. frame, went 6 for 6 in the NBA Finals, never played a game 7 in the NBA Finals, AND he probably could've gotten more rings if he didn't retire to play baseball in 1994...

THEN, if you're LeBron James with a 6'8" 250 pounds and has the tendency to form super-teams in order to win championships, shouldn't you be UNSTOPPABLE?

Before you say anything about the injuries to Kevin Love and Kyrie Irving would have created a different outcome for this series. I want to point out that Kevin Love's shooting ability would play favor to GSW's tempo. Kevin Love's injury opened up Tristan Thompson's play in the point and created matchup problems for the Warrior's smaller lineups. The impact of Irving's injury was probably a bigger factor than Love's solely because it left LBJ to be the facilitator for the remainder of the series and whenever LeBron tried to pass the ball around, his teammates played hot potato and gave it right back. This of course led to a stagnant offense with more isolations and less ball movement...and this fact.

BACK TO MY ARGUMENTS.

LEBRON TOOK HIS TALENTS TO SOUTH BEACH

In the NBA, you hear the phrase "ball don't lie" a lot, especially when it comes to a shooter who was fouled, but not according to the defender. When the shooter misses the first free throw, saying "ball don't lie" is kind of like saying "heh, karma b***h". In 2010, LBJ made "The Decision" to form a super-team with 2003 draft buddies Chris Bosh and Dwayne Wade. The so-called King James reigned supreme in Miami for 4 years and led the team to 4 straight finals appearances....and only walked away with 2 rings. Some would consider it an accomplishment, others would say it's not good enough. When the Heat lost that first finals appearance versus the Dallas Mavericks, I imagine a lot of LeBron haters chanting "ball don't lie" (including myself) because after the tremendous effort of the Miami super-team, it still wasn't good enough against Dirk and company.

After losing game 1 to the Thunder in the 2012 NBA Finals, James led the Heat to the team's 2nd NBA championship with 4 straight wins. With the Spurs up 3-2 in a thrilling 2013 NBA Finals, the Heat came up with a miracle 3-pointer by Ray Allen to force OT in game 6 and won the game to tie the series. In game 7, Mr. Fundamental (Tim Duncan) had the 2 opportunities to tie the game with less a minute to go, but failed. LeBron James capitalized on the following possession with a jump-shot which sealed the victory and secured back-to-back championships for the Heat. In 2014, the Spurs and Heat met for a Finals rematch and the Spurs showed that they were the better overall team winning the championship in 5 games.

LeBron James' career will always be tainted with the fact that he left the team that drafted him in order to form a super-team to win a couple of championships before coming back home. If you look at the all-time greats, most of them were able to play for one team and still win championships: Kobe Bryant, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Tim Duncan, Dirk Nowitzki, Bill Russell, and Jerry West. I wanted to add Michael Jordan to this list, but MJ had a 2-year stint with the Washington Wizards (with no playoff appearances) before he retired from the game for a 3rd time.

The Miami Heat pretty much had LeBron James on a 4-year rental period. Appeared in 4 straight Finals and got 2 championships. LBJ left South Beach along with a bandwagon of his followers and came back home to Cleveland to form another super-team with Kevin Love and Kyrie Irving. The 2015 Cavaliers have been plagued with injuries (Kevin Love - shoulder and Kyrie Irving - knee) and now it closely mirrors the Cavs teams LeBron has led prior to his departure to Miami. LBJ being the core of the offense distributing the ball as a point-forward.

LEBRON JAMES IS THE MOST VALUABLE PLAYER
Before LBJ went to Miami
2009-2010 Cavaliers Record - 61-21 (best in the Eastern Conference)
2009-2010 Heat Record - 47-35 (5th in the Eastern Conference)

After LBJ went to Miami
2010-2011 Cavaliers Record - 19-63 (worst in the Eastern Conference)
2010-2011 Heat Record - 58-24 (2nd in the Eastern Conference)

Is it coincidence that the Cleveland Cavaliers went from best to worst in one year AFTER LeBron James left? I don't think so. Let's look at this year.

Before LBJ went back to Cleveland
2013-2014 Cavaliers Record - 33-49 (10th in the East)
2013-2014 Heat Record - 54-28 (2nd in the East)

After LBJ went back to Cleveland
2014-2015 Cavaliers Record - 53-29 (2nd in the East)
2014-2015 Heat Record - 37-45 (10th in the East)

It's like they switched places huh?

How valuable in LeBron James? I would bet $100 that if LeBron left Cleveland after this season and played for the Minnesota Timberwolves (who had a 16-66 record this 2014-2015 season), they would automatically win 50-games and be in playoff contention. That just shows how good he is to make everyone around him better.

LeBron is so good that he is almost expected to come out with a triple-double every night. His stats don't lie. LeBron James in the only player in NBA history to average at least 27 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists for his career. WOW... if that doesn't blow your mind and convince you that he is the best player in the world right now... I don't think you enjoy the game of basketball.

With the NBA Finals over, I would like to add this amazing stat as well

Wait what...? Points...assists...AND rebounds for BOTH TEAMS?! Jimmy Crickets...

LEBRON HAS STAYED IN THE EASTERN CONFERENCE
Since 1998 (the last year Michael Jordan played for the Bulls) the Western Conference has dominated the NBA with multiple championship appearances by the LA Lakers, San Antonio Spurs and the Dallas Mavericks (11 championships out of 16 years for the West). This is the first time since 1999 that the NBA finals hasn't featured either Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan or Dwayne Wade.

In past several years, the Western Conference has featured teams with more than 42 wins at the 8th seed. On the other hand, the Eastern Conference has featured playoff teams under 0.500 multiple times while the 9th and 10th seeds for the Western Conference had a better record.

For a little refresher, the NBA schedule is formatted in the following way:

• 4 games against the other 4 division opponents (16 games)
• 4 games against 6 (out-of-division) conference opponents (24 games)
• 3 games against remaining 4 conference teams (12)
• 2 games against teams in the opposing conference (30)

This means that majority of the games LeBron James has played have been against a weaker Eastern Conference (52 out of 82 games). Easier games equals a better conference record which equals an easier road to the NBA finals. Hence, LeBron James' 5 straight appearances. What if LBJ played in the Western Conference for his career? How decorated would his career be then if he played 63% of his games against more quality opponents?

CLOSING STATEMENTS

If you're familiar with football, LeBron James can closely be compared to Peyton Manning in the NFL when it comes to regular season numbers and playoff success. Both players have posted records in both their sports during the regular season, but their playoff success can be considered mediocre with the high expectations set for them.

LeBron: 10 straight playoff appearances since 2006. 5 straight finals appearances since 2011 (4 with Miami and 1 with Cleveland) 2-4 and so far in the Finals.

Peyton: 14 playoff appearances since 1999. 11 with Indy and 3 with Denver. 9 appearances eliminated in the 1st game. 3 Superbowl appearances and only 1 championship. Just like LeBron playing in the Eastern Conference, Peyton has had the benefit to play in mediocre divisions. The AFC South when he played in Indianapolis and the AFC West where he is currently playing for the Broncos.

It's a shame that the media puts so much pressure not just on LeBron James, but on professional players to produce in their sport. In the end, they are still human. It was the media (specifically Sports Illustrated) that claimed LeBron James to be "The Chosen One" before he even started an NBA game. Now, all the pressure is on King James to dethrone the great Michael Jordan and his 6 rings.

Let's face it. LeBron is starting to reach the back-end of his career. In the past 8 years, he has participated in 6 NBA Finals and 2 gold-medal Olympic runs. That's a lot of basketball miles put onto a person's body over time. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if LBJ doesn't win another title before he retires. If he walks away from the game with only 2 rings, will that still make him the best of all-time? Only time will tell. Maybe this is the end of the super-team era. What the Golden State Warriors showed us for this year's NBA Finals is that even if you have the best basketball player on the planet...the best team will always be greater than the best player.

Wildcard Wednesday || Zombie Outbreak in LA

Greetings everyone and thanks for stopping by for another edition of Wildcard Wednesday! It's funny because I mentioned on my last blog that I would try to post on a weekly basis since there's so many things to talk about for Wildcard Wednesdays, but I took some time off and had some fun family activities last week.

Alrighty, let's get started.

We all ask ourselves the question. Are you prepared for a zombie apocalypse? Where would you go? Who would you try to connect with first? What's your desired weapon? Do you think you would make it a week? Would be able to kill a loved one who turned? Although they are all hypothetical, it will always remain in the back of our heads if we as a society are mentally and/or physically prepared for a zombie apocalypse.

If Hollywood's representation of zombies are what we would face, then I believe that humanity stands a chance. We've watched enough movies, seen TV shows, or even read comics to know more than enough on how to survive a zombie apocalypse. Aim for the head. Use silent weapons because noise attracts them. Know how to live life without electricity or even running wate. AVOID POWER TRIPPING. If we can trust that people won't turn into the Governor or Negan, then I think we'll be okay.

I bring all of this up because the Walking Dead universe is finally expanding to the West Coast (Los Angeles if you want to be specific). What's even more interesting is that they are bringing it back all the way to the origins of the apocalypse. Just in case you haven't watched The Walking Dead or even read the comics, the story of the Walking Dead is very gray on how it all happened. The main character, Rick Grimes, falls into a coma. When he wakes up in the hospital, the whole place has already fallen apart. Blood everywhere and when he walks out of the hospital you can see that even the military couldn't hold down the catastrophe.

Fear the Walking Dead will be premiering August 2015 and it has gotten me excited to see an entirely different point of view. In recent reports, Robert Kirkman has stated the the new spin-off will "stay out of the woods". Since most of the show has been centered around the rural parts of Georgia, it's obviously a complete turnaround looking to the urban areas of Los Angeles. We saw a glimpse of how downtown Atlanta turned out. Imagine what downtown Los Angeles will be...DAMN.

Another point of view that will capture audiences is seeing families fight to find each other and stay together in the beginning of this madness, but through their journey their loved ones will become the undead. The Walking Dead has done a really good job connecting with their audience emotionally since the show is filled with characters with tremendous back-stories. The use of flashbacks tells us their stories and how they got to where they are now gave us glimpses of the early days of the apocalypse, but now we'll be able to get a full season of the origins that ended civilization.

I like how in the Walking Dead universe they don't mention the word zombie. They are living in an alternate world outside the "living dead" bubble. This is key because the chaos following a viral outbreak through the city of angels is unknown to our world. Any kind of stories to link to a zombie apocalypse, our society will have that urge to prepare ourselves for that outcome. In Fear the Walking Dead, there will be those few people who will stir up paranoia and concern while most of the Los Angeles community will ignore the chatter because it seems like nonsense to them. It will be entertaining and frightening to see it all unfold.

If you haven't watched the Walking Dead or haven't caught up with the show, there's plenty of time to do so since season 6 premieres in October. However, I'm assuming that you won't even need to watch the series in order to enjoy Fear the Walking Dead.

Wildcard Wednesday || NCAA & NBA - No More 1-and-Done's

Greetings everyone and welcome to Blog #4 of Wildcard Wednesday on Notably Notable! I hope you all enjoyed your Memorial Day holiday and I would like to take a quick moment to thank those men and women who took the ultimate sacrifice for this great nation. It is in their honor that we live, breathe, and represent the United States of America by using our freedoms to change the world for the greater good.

I know that I've had been posting on a weekly basis recently, but that's kind of what happens when my schedule lines up nicely and I have some time on my hands between both of my jobs. Let's also add in the fact that there's so much to write about for Wildcard Wednesday, I'll probably never run out of topics.

Before I get to my main topic about the 1-and-Done controversy between the NBA and the NCAA, I would like to recap a couple of things that I did this past Memorial Day holiday:

Disneyland's Diamond Celebration

Roxanne and I were planning on attending the 24-hour Disney Day on the back end of the celebration. However, by the time I got off work at 2:30PM we already saw on Twitter that Disneyland reached full capacity and ended up letting people in around 2:30AM. Roxanne even had friends waiting for almost 5 hours just to get in at 2:30AM. That probably would've been us if we left San Diego around 3-3:30. Anyways...we ditched our Friday plans and ended up going to Disneyland on Sunday. We had a blast and enjoyed the new Paint the Night Parade as well as the Disneyland Forever fireworks show. We took our seats on Main Street around 4:30PM and waited the 4 hours, but it was totally worth it.

Mad Max: Fury Road

Some people don't like referring to Rotten Tomatoes for movie reviews because they can sometimes be a little bias. Trust me when I say this...I was on the edge of my seat more for this movie than I was for Avengers: Age of Ultron. Now, don't get me wrong, Age of Ultron was entertaining, but Mad Max: Fury Road took the action to a whole other level of intensity with "I don't even know what's going on, but OH MY GOD WATCH OUT!" kind of feelings. What more can I say.


NCAA-NBA 1-AND-DONE CONTROVERSY
A lot has come up the past couple of years when it comes to the NBA's draft eligibility and the rules set for up-and-coming NCAA players. Everyone has their own spin on it. I haven't read their opinions because I don't want to skew my own views. For those who aren't caught up in sports, basically the NBA set a rule in 2005 that set an age limit at 19 for players to be eligible to enter the NBA. There are some outliers for this situation, but that is the basic age limit. In addition to this, a player must be "one year out of high school". Hence, the the 1-and-done. The reason why the NBA created this rule was because there was an influx of players coming out of high school showing little to no experience that they can play on the professional level.

Here are some reason why I DO NOT LIKE 1-and-done's to enter the NBA draft:

• These players do not complete their education
• These players do not have experience playing on the professional level
• As players come in and out of college,  NCAA coaches are forced to change their system as different line-ups appear

You'll see these reasons appear throughout the rest of this blog when I show my proposal on how to change things up.

First, I would like to point out that the NCAA is money-making machine and is making billions of dollars off these college athletes through TV deals and merchandise from basketball, to football, to volleyball, to softball, and even to lacrosse. Yet, these players do not see a percent of that. Yes, they are most likely receiving an athletic scholarship, but it's only fair for the players to receive a lump sum of that money. How can we change that? Here's my proposal:

A player will decide if he/she wants to pursue their degree. If they do want to pursue their degree, they will receive their 4-year academic scholarship as normal. However, if a player decides to be a player full-time, then the school will be obligated to pay that player as if they were a staff member of the college/university. No taking classes, just focusing on playing that sport full-time for the school.

Well, there are a lot of counter-arguments you can bring up like "...sports aren't all year..." or "...it's dumb to possibly have some players playing as students and some playing as 'staff' members...". These are valid arguments, but the point that I'm trying to make with this proposal is to pay the players when they earn it.

Second, let's talk about the whole education aspect of players who go 1-and-done. Let's be real here, if you know that you're a good athlete and you have agents saying that you'll be an automatic 1st round draft pick, why wouldn't you go to the NBA as soon as possible? With this "one year out of high school", players are using this one year to play in college sports to take advantage of the media outlets to showcase their talents. You hear a lot of players saying that they're not thinking about entering the draft because they're focused on the college season you should already know in the back of their minds that they're thinking about shaking hands with Adam Silver when their name is announced on draft day. So, if they're only going to be playing for one year and they know that they're going to be leaving after one year...what do these players even study? Should they even take these classes seriously if they know they're going to make millions of dollars for the NBA? Wouldn't you think it's a complete waste of time for these professors to grade their papers and teach them about philosophy when all they're thinking about is life on the basketball court? Imagine you're John Smith and you're looking sign-up for classes and you are 1 spot short of getting into the class. What if that 1 spot is taken by a college basketball player who has the potential to be the #1 draft pick in next year's draft? Is that player really going to using that knowledge about American History to good use in the NBA? Probably not. But there was also Jane Adams who tried to apply for X University, however admissions already filled up the student body. One of those students is a college freshman who isn't even planning on attending 4-years of college to get his degree when Jane Adams wanted to get her Bachelor's in Biology. I know it took me a while to get to my point, but these are things that we don't really think about when it comes to these college athletes shortening their academic scholarships to pursue their dreams. Do I blame them? No, because that is what they've wanted to do since they were a little kid. But let's also remind these kids that there is life after basketball. Most players play 12-16 years before they hang it up. They retire before they're 40...now what?

What do people like to advise college students before they get their first big-time job? Get an internship. Get that entry-level experience. A college player may seem to dominate in the NCAA, but in the NBA players are faster, stronger, and smarter. Nothing the NCAA can match up with. It's very important to the NBA that they develop their players and prepare them for the professional level. That's why they have their own Development League and I believe utilizing this asset will be key to my next proposal.

• If a player wants to avoid attending college after high school with a desire to play in the NBA, they are required to complete 3 years in the NBA Development League before teams can reach out and sign them.
• If a player decides to cut it short after one year of playing college basketball with a desire to play in the NBA, they are required to complete 2 years in the NBA Development League before teams can reach out and sign them.
• If a player decides to cut it short after 2 years of playing college basketball with a desire to play in the NBA, they are required to complete 1 year in the NBA Development League before teams can reach out and sign them.
• If a player decides to cut it short after 3 years of playing college basketball with a desire to play in the NBA, they are allowed to sign with a team as an undrafted player.
• If a player completes their 4-year degree with a desire to play in the NBA, they are allowed to enter the NBA draft. 

What does this proposal work on? It focuses on education and a player to gain experience. I truly believe that a player coming out of college requires discipline and hard work in order to play in the NBA. I don't think it's fair for veteran players who have put in their time to lose their spot to a rookie just because a younger player has displayed excellent talent in college. These younger players need to earn their spot. This proposal should also help build on the NBA Development League not just for media attention but to also expand teams by creating more opportunities for players who want to grow and build on their fundamentals as professionals.

One main argument here is about injuries. If a player with major potential happens to injure themselves playing in a D-League game, then what does that to that player's chances to get into the NBA? Fair argument. Can't really say much there because injuries can happen at any moment. All I can say is that if a player really is that good...they'll work their way up. Just like how any normal working class human being.

Wildcard Wednesday || Baymax to the Bare Minimum

Welcome everyone and thank you for stopping by for Blog #3 of Wildcard Wednesday. Since last week's blog was extensive and contained multiple topics, I figured I would go complete opposite and be quick and straight to the point. Today's topic: Big Hero 6 with a little Frozen rant.

I was on Twitter yesterday and I saw @Forbes tweet the following:

"Disney sold $1 billion in Frozen-licensed merchandise last year (link)"

Which isn't very surprising because Frozen was released November 2013 and started building momentum during the beginning of 2014. What does surprise me is that Walt Disney CEO Bob Iger has mentioned that Frozen is considered to be one of Disney's top 5 properties...after less than 2 years.

With the spotlight all over Frozen, Big Hero 6 quietly became one of Disney's biggest box-office hits. Oh, it also won an Oscar for Best Animated Feature, but who cares about that when Cinderella was featuring an all-new Frozen short right? I don't recall Paperman or Feast getting merchandise, but Disney was quick to design merchandise for Frozen Fever. I've seen more merchandise for Frozen Fever than Big Hero 6. That's just sad.

Who had the chance to meet Baymax and Hiro Hamada? Not many. If I knew that Disney was only going to keep their meet n' greet for less than 3 months, then I would've stayed in that 2-hour line on that December day. How many of you got to meet Anna and Elsa? Probably a good amount of you because Disney has had a special Frozen Fun extravaganza in Disney's California Adventure since January  7, 2015. There was so much marketing for this, it pretty much eliminated any signs of Big Hero 6. Let me remind you that BH6 was released the first week of November. After 2 months, Baymax and Hiro were pulled from Tomorrowland and Arendelle took over DCA.

I remember how disappointed I was as a guest when I visited Animation Academy and they only offered to draw Olaf. Their headline being "Do you want to draw a snowman?" No, I wanted to draw BAYMAX! Frozen was 14 months ago. Big Hero 6 was 3 months ago.

In my honest opinion, I would've preferred a re-creation of San Fransokyo instead of Arendelle. Don't get me wrong, what Disney did in a short span of time to design the snow play area and the meet n' greet spots for Anna, Elsa, and Olaf is impressive. It makes ZERO sense for Arendelle to have a club/dance scene with alcohol. That's not magical at all. I have some other opinions on the Frozen Fun extravaganza, but I don't want to drag this post along. I'm glad Frozen Fun will be over after May 21st. Sorry, not sorry. 

Disney has milked out as much as they could from their Frozen franchise and unfortunately Big Hero 6 will always live under the shadows. Why? There are a couple of reasons:

1. Disney underestimated the amount of praise and popularity Big Hero 6 was going to receive.
2. Disney had a lot on its production plate for 2015: Cinderella in March, Age of Ultron and Tomorrowland in May, Inside Out in June, Ant-Man in July, The Good Dinosaur in November, and Star Wars in December.

Look at that line-up. No wonder Disney wasn't able to market and produce merchandise for Big Hero 6. They have 2 Pixar productions, their flagship Marvel film, and the beginning of another Star Wars trilogy to budget for in 2015. On the bright side, a recent report has claimed that Stan Lee confirmed a Big Hero 7 sequel. (link) I'm really hoping that this is true because the Marvel and Disney Animation Studio team deserve it. 

Until then, Baymax will be waiting in his docking station charging awaiting for the call to suit up.

Wildcard Wednesday || MARVEL'S Avengers: Age of Deflating Floyd "Money" Mayweather

Hello everyone and thanks for stopping for by for Blog #2 of Wildcard Wednesday. The difficult part about having a blog about Disney, sports, and entertainment is that a lot goes on in a week. I went from wanting to talk about the Chargers 2015 draft selections, then I was on a roll to vent my hatred for Floyd "Money" Mayweather and everything he stands for. I watched Avengers: Age of Ultron opening weekend and boy am I willing to spend another $15 to watch it again. Earlier last week I finished watching Marvel's Agents of SHIELD. I was bored so what did I turn to? The Netflix exclusive Marvel's Daredevil. I am now on episode 9, but I am 100% certain I will finish this season by the time you read this (there are only 13 episodes. HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT). This past weekend showcased back-to-back-to-back buzzer-beaters by Paul Pierce, Derrick Rose, and LeBron James in the NBA Playoffs. How about that Hack-a-Jordan huh? Now, there's this whole DEFLATE-GATE fiasco.

I'll make a few quick points on everything because I really want to give you thoughts about Floyd Mayweather before I explode.

Chargers 2015 Draft
Melvin Gordan III? Approve 110%. The Chargers made the sacrifice to get their impact guy and it will pay 10-fold when he looks to fill in the big shoes of LaDainian Tomlinson. Chargers added depth and filled in key defensive holes for the remainder of the draft. Others may argue that they should've drafted an offensive lineman, but they really just need to mend together and build chemistry after going through 5 centers and too many different starting o-lines.

Avengers: Age of Ultron
Lights, camera, ACTION! Right from the get go. Some critics say that there was "too much" action and not enough time to build the plot. Who cares? It's not like this movie is going to be nominated for an Oscar. Here's your plot. Ultron...bad. Avengers...good. Round 1...FIGHT! And then for the finisher...wait for it...THANOS!

Marvel's Agents of SHIELD Season 1
I didn't watch the show on a weekly basis, but seeing how even the Season 2 timeline matched up with Age of Ultron makes me want to watch Season 3 when it ties in with Captain America: Civil War. Season 1 starts off really slow up to the first 5 episodes, then it just gets awesome. I started to appreciation the things that Marvel has done to tie in their TV series to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and then all of a sudden I was engulfed into another perspective that wasn't shown in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Marvel's Daredevil (Netflix Exclusive)
Man this show is dark. Literally and emotionally. But I guess that's reflective of Matthew Murdock and his gift. I'll probably be done with this show by the time you're reading this, but it's 13 episodes of a deep plot stirring in Hell's Kitchen. If you're not subscribed to Netflix, I would definitely say that $7.99 for that first month is worth it just for this show.

2015 NBA Playoffs
After seeing 5 out of 8 first round playoff matchups going 5 games or less we actually have some good playoff basketball for the conference semi-finals. Both #1 seeds are being tested by the #5's. After Derrick Rose banks in a 3-point buzzer beater to keep home-court advantage, LeBron James strikes back with a buzzer beater of his own to make it a 3-game series. What was said after the game just goes to show that David Blatt means nothing to that team. LeBron James is really the coach of that team and he'll do whatever he wants because he's LeBron James. Lastly, here are my quick thoughts about the Hack-A-Whoever shenanigans. There is no need to change the rules. If a team wants to rack up personal fouls and risk being in the bonus early in the quarter that's their problem. If you have a professional basketball player (who is getting paid millions of dollars by the way) that can't shoot more than 50% at the free throw line then that's your problem. How about you put that player in the gym and don't let him leave until he makes 50 in a row.

Deflate-Gate
I could care less about the pressure inside a football. The QB still needs to throw the ball. The receiver still needs to get open and catch the ball. If you're going to care about the pressure inside the ball, then I expect every team will have an inspection for every game. And for the sake of the fans they should show on the screen the pressure of the ball that is being used. If they really want to take it that far, maybe they should regulate how sticky a receivers gloves are because that gives a competitive advantage. Maybe should regulate the length of a players cleats because that also gives a player a competitive edge on the field. It's all bogus. The obvious issue here is the cover-up. If Brady was innocent why didn't he just give up his phone? Even Ted Wells explained that he offered Brady and his agent to be in the same room and Brady's agent would just read the messages off the phone with Wells not putting a finger on the device. If you can't even allow that, then something is obviously fishy.


Floyd "Money" Mayweather: The False Idol
This isn't a bitter Filipino complaining about how "The Fight of the Century" turned out to be a chicken run. This is more about a human being disappointed at another human being's character, lifestyle, and the media attention the latter receives.

I don't use the word hate a lot, but man do I hate Floyd "Money" Mayweather and everything he stands for. He is known to be THE highest paid athlete in the world. More than Kobe Bryant. More than LeBron James. More than Tiger Woods. More than Cristiano Ronaldo. You know what's even crazier? That's all from salary/winnings. $0 in endorsements (http://www.forbes.com/athletes/list/#tab:overall). What makes matters worse is that he is undefeated in his sport. Haters can't even prove that he "sucks" because no one has even been able to take him down. Unfortunately, Floyd is also a smart businessman. He has brainwashed groups of confused losers into believing that money is everything; hence "The Money Team". I'll be honest with you...that May 2nd bout between Pacquiao and Mayweather was the first time I've seen Mayweather fight (those slow motion highlight clips don't count). Not only was I pissed about Mayweather's fighting style, but I was pissed about the commentators reaction during and after the fight. Why? Because they are pretty much down on bended knee praising Mayweather like he is some kind of boxing God. All I can hear and read about Mayweather was "...what a smart boxer!", "...look at his technique!", "...this is just another day in the office". Wow, are you kidding me? It shouldn't take a rocket scientist to learn how to run away from a flurry of punches. It wouldn't take me more than a day to learn how to hug my opponent whenever I'm in trouble against the ropes. These analysts/commentators praise this kind of boxing? That doesn't sound like greatness to me. That doesn't sound like "the best ever" to me. It sounds like you can plug in anyone with speed and agility and they could just be like Mayweather. Sorry y'all, I hope you're still with me on this because I have one more point I would like to make. Last year Ray Rice knocked out his wife and after further investigation was suspended indefinitely by the NFL. As of December 1, 2014 Rice has become a free agent and has yet to be signed by an NFL team. Mayweather has been charged not once, not twice, but numerous times of domestic-violence. This guy obviously has a problem. Look at his history and the "punishments" he has received:

• 2002: 6-month suspension -- 2 days of house arrest -- 48 hours of community service
• 2004: 12-month jail sentence  -- $1,000 fine OR 100 hours of community service
• 2005: 90-day jail sentence
• 2010: $3,000 bail
• 2011: 90-day jail sentence -- 100 hours of community service -- 12-month domestic violence program -- $2,500 fine

Not only do I believe that Mayweather's style of boxing will eventually kill the sport (if it hasn't already), but letting this despicable human-being continue to represent the sport sickens me. I imagine that the only reason why WBO and other boxing organizations haven't banned Mayweather from the sport (just like how Adam Silver did to Donald Sterling) is because they crave the amount of amount of money Mayweather brings each and every time he steps into the ring.

It's disappointing that businesses care more about the $$$ than the image that they present to fans or even aspiring young boxers. It's disappointing that God has "blessed" this man with a $200 million paycheck after the May 2nd hug-fest. It's disappointing that the poor will put more value on $5 while  this man will continue to eat $1,000 meals or even take a picture of himself with stacks of money on his bed asking his followers for a caption.

Sigh...

Give this man some humble juice. He might need a gold-plated goblet with 20-carot diamonds sprinkled all over it in order to drink it though. 

Wildcard Wednesday Introduction

Greetings everyone and welcome to the Wildcard Wednesday edition of Notably Notable. I think a little introduction of myself will help set an outline for what Wildcard Wednesday's are going to be about. My name is Jayme Ross Eva and I am a 24-year old Filipino-American from San Diego, CA. I  graduated from the University of San Diego (...and no I didn't spell UCSD wrong...they're different universities) with a BS/BA in Mechanical Engineering in May 2012 with aspirations to become a Walt Disney Imagineer. Shortly after graduation I participated in the Fall 2012 Disney College Program from June 2012 to January 2013 as a Store Operations Host.  Now I am currently a full-time Maintenance Mechanic at AQUATICA San Diego (SeaWorld's Water Park) and I have been been a Disney Store Cast Member since August 2013. On my free-time I am an assistant coach for NFL Flag San Diego where I occasionally submit game highlights.

As you can see, I have a little bit of a Disney background and that is actually going to be one of the few topics I will be talking about on Wildcard Wednesdays. Since I didn't state it before, I will state it now and probably every time I post something Disney related:

There is always news surrounding the world of Disney so I will spread my opinions on some trending stories that are Disney-related. I might even share some Cast Member experiences and "confessions".

Next on my list of things that I would like to talk about on Wildcard Wednesdays is going to be about sports. I know "sports" can be very vague, but that is kind of the reason why we have it under Wildcard Wednesdays. I follow XTRA Sports 1360 here in San Diego and about 90% of the time I'm watching ESPN or some other sports-related activity. Why? To me, watching sports is like how other people watching their favorite reality show. However, in my opinion, sports is one true reality show. It's the one thing that you can watch that is unscripted and the emotions are real (besides all that flopping that goes on). There may be some that would like to argue that games are fixed and there's a conspiracy for every controversial call, but that's a topic for another day. There are so many things we can talk about sports, but I will specifically focus on the major sports: football, basketball, and baseball. Sorry Soccer (futbol) fans. I played soccer for 8 years when I was in grade school, but I just don't follow it. I would also like to add that I follow the San Diego Chargers, the Los Angeles Lakers, and the San Diego Padres. A good amount of sports recap will feature those 3 teams, but I will also cover other trending/controversial topics that are surrounding the world of sports.

The last topic that will be covered on Wildcard Wednesdays will be "Entertainment". Yes, another vague topic, but what I had in mind was that I would be covering newly released movies and reviewing some TV shows that I'm currently watching right now. The movie lineup for Summer 2015 looks pretty exciting with Avengers: Age of Ultron leading it off. I normally don't watch movies opening weekend just to avoid the huge crows, but hopefully I can put up an afterthoughts post on Avengers 2 in the next couple of weeks. Like many other people I don't like waiting week-to-week for shows. I'm more of a binge-watcher; however the only 2 shows that I keep up with weekly are the Walking Dead and Game of Thrones.
